Solent Freeport

Solent Freeport

The Solent Freeport was one of eight approved by Government in March 2021. Freeports are designed to spark economic regeneration in areas whose economy is underperforming by incentivising investment and growth. Ministers have argued they will benefit their hinterland, creating jobs and improving skills. SPC have been working with law firm Blake Morgan to explore the impacts of and opportunities created by the Solent Freeport for the local business community.

Our Policy Paper – Solent Freeport: Opportunities for the central South – views from local businesses – was launched on 21st March 2023. It sets out some initial findings and discusses what will help make the Freeport a regional success. It is based on discussions with a number of local businesses, all of whom are keen to see a successful Freeport drive regional success. Blake Morgan and SPC will be holding a seminar later in the spring to discuss the Policy Paper and reactions to the ideas and suggestions it contains.

The feedback from the launch of our paper has been very positive. We are now following up with a wider seminar and panel discussion focused on reactions to the ideas and suggestions the Policy Paper contains. That seminar will help frame a final report aimed at helping ensure the benefits the Solent Freeport can offer the region’s businesses and communities are realised.

The Solent Freeport: opportunities for international business and SMEs seminar will take place on Tuesday 23 May, 8:30 – 10:30 am at Blake Morgan’s Southampton office (New Kings Court, Tollgate, Chandler’s Ford, Eastleigh. SO53 3LG).

We’d be delighted if you are able to join us and contribute to the discussion.

Please RSVP to Rebecca Whitehead of Blake Morgan or ruth.eastwood@southernpolicycentre.co.uk
